Paul Offit, MD, describes how his lab developed a rotavirus vaccine. The work began in 1980 and eventually led to the licensure of the vaccine in 2006. In the United States, the vaccine has reduced incidence of disease 90%. In the developing world, the vaccine has the potential to prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths a year.
