- Jaime Ferrán vaccinating for cholera in Spain, 1885
Spanish physician Jaime Ferrán (1852-1929) developed a live, attenuated cholera vaccine around 1885. His vaccine was the first to immunize humans against a bacterial disease. Ferrán vaccinated about 50,000 people in Valencia during a cholera epidemic.
